What is Fixed Dentures ?

Fixed dentures, also known as implant-supported fixed dentures or implant-supported dentures, are a type of dental prosthesis that provides a permanent and stable solution for replacing missing teeth. Unlike traditional removable dentures, fixed dentures are securely attached to dental implants, which are surgically placed in the jawbone. This offers several advantages in terms of comfort, stability, and functionality.

Here are key points about fixed dentures:

  1. Dental Implant Integration: Fixed dentures rely on dental implants as a foundation. Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically inserted into the jawbone. Over time, the implants integrate with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration. This provides a strong and stable base for the fixed dentures.

  2. Enhanced Stability and Functionality: Fixed dentures offer superior stability compared to traditional removable dentures. Because they are securely anchored to dental implants, they do not slip or move while speaking, eating, or engaging in daily activities. This enhanced stability allows for better chewing efficiency, speech clarity, and overall confidence in the function of the dentures.

  3. Improved Comfort and Fit: Fixed dentures are custom-made to fit the individual’s mouth and are designed to provide a comfortable and precise fit. The absence of bulky plastic covering the palate, as seen in some removable dentures, allows for a more natural feel and improved taste sensation. The secure fit of fixed dentures also minimizes gum irritation and sore spots.

  4. Preservation of Jawbone Health: Dental implants used in fixed dentures help preserve the health and integrity of the jawbone. When a tooth is lost, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate over time due to lack of stimulation. Dental implants mimic the natural tooth root, providing necessary stimulation to the jawbone and preventing bone loss. This helps maintain facial structure and oral health.

How does Fixed Dentures work ?

  1. Dental Implant Placement: The first step in the process involves the surgical placement of dental implants. Dental implants are small titanium posts that are inserted into the jawbone. The number of implants required will depend on the individual’s specific needs and the condition of their jawbone.

  2. Osseointegration: After the dental implants are placed, a process called osseointegration takes place. This is the natural bonding process where the implants fuse with the surrounding jawbone over time, creating a strong and stable foundation. It typically takes a few months for the implants to fully integrate with the jawbone.

  3. Abutment Placement: Once osseointegration is complete, abutments are attached to the implants. Abutments are connector pieces that protrude above the gumline and serve as attachment points for the fixed dentures.

  4. Impression and Dental Laboratory Work: After the abutments are in place, an impression or digital scan is taken of the mouth. This impression is used by a dental laboratory to create custom-made fixed dentures that fit the individual’s mouth and match their natural teeth.

  5. Attachment of Fixed Dentures: Once the fixed dentures are fabricated, they are attached to the abutments on the dental implants. The dentures are securely and permanently fixed in place, providing stability, functionality, and a natural-looking smile.

  6. Bite Adjustment and Follow-Up: After the fixed dentures are attached, the dentist will ensure that the bite is properly aligned and comfortable. Any necessary adjustments to the fit or bite may be made at this stage. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor the health of the dentures and the surrounding tissues, as well as to address any concerns or issues that may arise.

Why Fixed Dentures?

Improved Stability and Functionality: Fixed dentures provide excellent stability and functionality. They are securely anchored to dental implants, which fuse with the jawbone. This stability allows for comfortable chewing, speaking, and laughing without the worry of dentures slipping or moving out of place

Enhanced Aesthetics: Fixed dentures are customized to match the natural appearance of your teeth, creating a seamless and natural-looking smile. The replacement teeth are carefully designed in terms of shape, size, and color to blend in with your existing teeth, enhancing your overall facial aesthetics.

Preserves Jawbone Health: Dental implants used in fixed dentures help stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss that can occur when teeth are missing. By integrating with the jawbone, dental implants provide the necessary support and prevent bone resorption, helping to maintain facial structure and preventing a sunken or aged appearance.

Long-Term Durability: Fixed dentures are known for their long-term durability. The materials used, such as porcelain or zirconia, are highly resistant to wear and staining, ensuring a long-lasting solution for missing teeth. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, fixed dentures can provide functional and aesthetic benefits for many years.

Improved Confidence and Self-Esteem: Having a stable and attractive set of teeth can significantly boost your confidence and self-esteem. Fixed dentures eliminate the worry and self-consciousness associated with removable dentures, allowing you to enjoy social interactions, speak confidently, and smile without any concerns about denture movement or slippage.
